ADVENT HAMPERS

It's that time of year again for Advent Hampers!

Each class in the school is assigned a family, to whom they will be donating hygiene items and small gifts to.
Our grade 6 class will be donating to a small family of 4. There is a mother, a girl in grade 5, a little boy in grade 3 and a little girl in kindergarten.

As a class, we have brainstormed possible items and gifts which would be relevant to that family. Students can write their name next to the item(s) they would like to bring in, on this google spreadsheet.

The collection for the hampers will start this week, and go until December 17th. We will also be having a Christmas Spirit Day on Friday, December 8th, where students can bring a small donation to dress up in their Christmas cheer! All donations will go towards the Advent Hampers.

Thank you again for your ongoing support!

Grade 6 White Elephant Sale

Our Grade 6 students at St-Cecilia will be running our 5th annual White   Elephant   Sale   on   Friday,   December   15th,    2017.

We will be happy to accept donations of  gently used, clean  items anytime now up until December 14th . Categories include: books, toys, CDs, movies, puzzles, games, Christmas knickknacks, jewellery  (no used earrings please) , crafts and household items.      We   will    not    be   accepting   clothing,   footwear   or   stuffed   animals.

Last year this was a success due to the excitement of the students as they found bargains to bring home and the generosity of the families who took the time to find   items   at   home   suitable   for   our   sale.
With the help of teachers and parent volunteers, the students do the work of collecting, sorting, pricing, and selling items that have been donated. Students are invited to bring a loonie or two from their allowance to purchase and wrap items. Grade   6   students   help   the   younger   students   shop   and   it   is   always   fun   for   everyone.

The Grade 6s are very excited about this initiative and it is a wonderful leadership opportunity for them. You never know, mom or dad might even get a Christmas gift from   this   amazing   sale.

PLEASE DONATE!!!

Thirteen percent of Canadians are in a state of food insecurity, which means they are unable to access a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Without enough food, many people feel the effects of short-term hunger, like headaches, nausea and the inability to concentrate.
Each month, over 850,000 Canadians require help from food banks—more than one third of these individuals are children and youth.

Bring in your non-perishable food items and help make a difference!

TOGETHER WE CAN SCARE HUNGER!!!!

UN BON VOYAGE!
Summer seems to have flown by with all the traveling I managed this summer observing orangutans, komodos and dolphins, OH MY!. I'm excited to share pictures and stories and for us to have a fun and successful year!

Here are a few pics from Indonesia :)

Starting with me at Borobudur Temple on the island of Java.
I think I might have got a little too close...

This male orangutan was definitely king of the jungle in Sumatra.
This is me scaling the hilltops on Padar Island on my way to Komodo Island.

Here's a school bus in Indonesia! Could you imagine arriving to school like this?!?!

HOPE EVERYONE HAS A FABULOUS FIRST DAY!!!

Air and Flight

Students have been investigating the properties of  air and flight. Today we talked about

Bernoulli's Principle: an increase in the speed of a fluid produces a decrease in pressure and a decrease in speed
produces an increase in pressure.

The curved top of a wing creates a longer distance from front to back than the straight bottom. This causes the air on top to travel farther, and thus faster, to reach the back than the air underneath, creating a difference in pressure between the two surfaces

Here's a quick video that explains Bernoulli's Principle.

History in the making

The grade 6 students just finished their new version of the Canadian Coat of Arms. Students were asked to update this important symbol to better represent Canada's history and identity.  They were then asked to explain and support their choices with facts and examples.

Students can continue to deepen their learning by visiting #OnThisDay ... in Canada's history! On this page, you'll discover significant events that shaped our society.

Monday 1 May 2017

Communautés Canadiennes

For Education Week and as part of our CANADA 150 celebration, students are looking at different Canadian communities up North. Students formulated thoughtful questions to help guide their inquiries and discover how these and other communities begin and develop. They will also explore the important issues and events that have shaped them.

World Peace Gong

The grade 6 students have been working on redesigning our Canadian Coat of Arms to better reflect our Canadian heritage and identity. Symbols can be a powerful representation when combined into something monumental. Pictured here is the Peace Gong in Indonesia. It sparked some interesting conversations :)
