Musical Theatre Presentation

Our students have been happily singing and dancing through the month of December.

Each class has been working on their choreographed song. Please continue to practice this song and dance routine at home. The lyrics and music can be found in your child's HAPARA music folder.

The dress rehearsal is happening on December 15th for students. Students should bring in their
suggested costume to make sure they are able to perform with it on.

We are inviting parents to see their child’s musical number on Friday December 16th. You are
welcome to join us between 1:05 - 1:45 to catch Mlle Carroll's class performance.

It's that time of year again! 

The White elephant Sale is back to raise money for the grade 6 end of year field trip as well as for our Advent hampers. We are asking the grade 6s along with St. Cecilia Community to clean out their basements in search of gently used, clean items for our sale. 

Categories include:  books, toys, stuffed animals, CDs, movies, puzzles, games, Christmas knickknacks, jewellery (no used earrings please), crafts and household items.

We are also looking for used Christmas cards that we will re-purpose. Grade 6 students are asked to bring in any craft supplies (sparkles, buttons, scrap book paper, glue, googly eyes, etc.) to add Christmas cheer to our recycling craft. 

Any donations of wrapping paper, tissue paper, bows, gift bags and gift tags would also be greatly appreciated. This is in keeping with our Gospel value of Stewardship of the Environment.

Inquiry

We have been working on the inquiry process. We are exploring different international organisations in which Canada participates. 

As formulating questions is one of the first steps... we have also been revising how to ask questions using appropriate sentence structure. Students are encouraged to revise these skills. 

Sustainable Development Goals

WHAT CAN WE DO TO CHANGE OUR WORLD?

As we continue our exploration of  Canada's interaction with the world, it is important that we become aware of the magnitude of the issues around the world. The good news, is that there is a plan... and we can help!

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUCCESS

It's been a very busy week ... ending with our Social Justice assembly today! The grade 6 students shared inspirational biographies, sang to inspire others and got to relish in their justice artwork.

Social Justice begins with ...

Students reflected on the actions we must take to see change in the world. They are to find words, sentences and images to 'write on the walls' and send a message to others (in French and English).

Canada's connections with the world

Today, students took a closer look at where our clothing is made. We observed that most of our clothing came from various countries in Asia. 

Students were asked to research 3 reasons why most of our clothing is from Asia and include their own opinion and reflect on their findings.

Catholic Graduate Expectation - JUSTICE

At the end of November, the grade 6 students will be organizing our CGE assembly for JUSTICE.

The aim of this restorative practice in our catholic school community is to strengthen relationships and to manage conflict and tensions by repairing harm as a way of building community (local & global) and responding to God's call.

At the end of the assembly, students will lead the school in song to raise awareness and stand up for justice. Students are encouraged to listen to the song at home and practice singing the lyrics.

Where am I?

Today, students had a chance to travel the world! We worked on asking strategic questions to pinpoint our exact locations. 

Tomorrow we will begin investigating Social Justice. 

Social justice encompasses a great many ideas. The easiest definition presumes that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. Teaching children that everyone is deserving of such things means teaching them to value diversity and all people.

The Tulip Legacy Story

Another global connection...

Today we discussed tulips in Canada and how they’ve taken on a larger meaning – and have come to symbolize this country’s deep bond with the Netherlands after the Second World War. 

Then-Queen Wilhelmina sent the original shipment of bulbs to Ottawa immediately after the Second World War. This was her thanks for our nation’s role in liberating the Netherlands at the end of the war, and for hosting then-Princess Julianna and her daughters. They lived safely in the Rockcliffe neighbourhood of Ottawa for most of the war. Julianna resided at Stornaway and gave birth to Princess Margaret at a local hospital.

Remembrance Day

Tomorrow we will gather in our gymnasium for our Remembrance Day Ceremony. The Grade 6 students will recite "In Flanders Fields" in French. 

We are asking students to wear black or red and to bring change to purchase a poppy for the performance. Parents are welcome to join us at 10:45 to 11:45 to help us commemorate this special day. 

Positive Global Relations

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses WE Day crowd about Donald Trump win

As we continue to explore Canada's interactions with the global community, Justin Trudeau had a positive message for students.

Trudeau said Canada has no closer friend, partner and ally than the U.S., and that he looks forward to working with Trump's administration and the U.S. Congress on trade, investment and international peace and security.

GLOBAL ISSUES

As we continue to explore GLOBAL ISSUES here is a great website with resources on topics of global concern. Centered around a student magazine that explores current issues through informational texts, photography, data, and more, each edition highlights a significant present-day humanitarian need. 

ON EFFRAIE LA FAIM !

The grade 6 students at St-Cecilia showed leadership and creativity when it came to this year's WE SCARE HUNGER CAMPAIGN. The result... A huge donation of nonperishable food items to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard and a day of spooky celebration to wrap up the initiative! Great job grade 6!
